Reviewed 13 Oct 2026 by the IrelandStudyVisa.com team. This is not an official Irish government page. Information is checked against official DBS and Irish immigration sources where those sources apply.
This checklist uses Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) and Embassy of Ireland New Delhi pages. Check them again before you fly, because rules change.
Passport and visa
- ISD asks for a passport valid for at least 12 months after the date you plan to arrive in Ireland.
- The Embassy asks you to check the details on your visa as soon as you get it. The dates on the visa are Irish dates.
- A long stay "D" visa gives you 90 days in Ireland to register (Embassy).
- If you get a new passport, the Embassy says the visa stays valid if you also carry the old passport that holds it. A copy is not accepted.
Flights
ISD asks you not to buy travel tickets before you know the outcome of your visa application. The Embassy says flight bookings are not required for a visa.
Documents to carry
ISD says you should bring copies of documents from your visa application. Its border page lists, at a minimum, your passport, visa and boarding card. Other useful documents include:
- Proof of sufficient funds
- Proof of health insurance for your stay
- Details of your accommodation
- Letters that explain the purpose of your trip, such as your college letter
Medical insurance
ISD says all non-EEA students must have private medical insurance covering accident, disease and any hospital stay. For first-year students, travel insurance may be enough if it covers the full year, with at least €25,000 for accident and €25,000 for disease. Proof must be in English.
At the Irish border
An immigration officer decides whether you may enter. ISD says you can be refused entry even with a valid visa if the officer is not satisfied with your documents or explanations. If you are allowed in, you get a landing stamp. ISD says the maximum stay on the stamp is 3 months. If you are refused, you are returned to where you came from.
Registering in Ireland
- ISD says you must register within 90 days of arriving.
- Since 13 January 2025, ISD registers everyone at its Registration Office, 13-14 Burgh Quay, Dublin 2. You need an appointment.
- ISD says the fee could be €300, depending on your permission, paid by card at the appointment.
- ISD says your Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card is posted to you, usually within 10 working days.
